Wine Recommendation: Te Kota

I’ve yet to find anything about this wine, not even a picture, on the Internet, but I can assure you it is divine and affordable- just $14 a bottle. I was browsing the wine selection at Kahn’s not too long ago and one of the staff members suggested I give Te Kota a try. You should do the same. In the meantime, I will try to dig up more about this wonderful New Zealand wine.

Compelling Short Films

I’ve seen these three videos (primarily the first) passed around the digital-sphere quite a bit today, and I must admit I am quite envious.

3 guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage… all to turn 3 ambitious linear concepts based on movement, learning and food ….into 3 beautiful and hopefully compelling short films….. I wonder how much they spent on the entire trip.

This is exactly what I need. Adventure.

Indy Film Fest

I hope most of my local readers are familiar with the Indy Film Fest by now. But if not, allow me to enlighten you! This 10 day film festival, held at the IMA, is a perfect way to escape the summer heat and check out some films you might not normally see, or even know existed.

My boyfriend and I attended the opening night festivities and really enjoyed the venue (Toby Theater) and Sundance winning film, Another Earth, a fantasy/science fiction drama directed by Mike Cahill. I HIGHLY encourage everyone to check it out- seriously one of the better films I’ve seen in a long time. Description as quoted from the program: “on the night of the discovery of a duplicate planet in the solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident.” The acting was stellar and while the plot can be predicted quickly into the movie, you are surprised by the reality in which you discover the relationships and other planet. We also caught the How Odd! Shorts Program- perfect for those with small attention spans! We plan to see Fuck My Life on Thursday and a few others before the event wraps up this weekend. Suggestions?!

Tomato and Hass Avocado Salad

This past Tuesday, I coordinated and attended a cooking segment at FOX 59 for one of my clients, Seasons 52. The head chef of the recently opened Indianapolis location did yet another in-studio cooking segment where he talked about the new summer menu items (menu changes weekly & four times a year) while preparing a delicious salad for FOX 59 viewers. I knew immediately after my first bite that I had to try and make it myself, and… I did- successfully! I would also recommend adding some citrus juice to preserve any leftovers and then enjoying them the next day on a bagel with cream cheese or as a sandwich with slices of the ciabatta bread.

Ingredients for Salad:

2 ripe tomatoes, cut in 1” chunks
2 avocados, peeled and cut in 1” chunks
¼ cup cilantro, chopped
2 ounces sherry vinegar
2 ounces extra virgin olive oil
½ teaspoon sea salt
Pinch of black ground pepper

For Plating:

4 thick sliced pieces of grilled ciabatta bread
2 cups arugula (wild organic)
Balsamic vinegar (aged) to taste

1. Place avocado and tomato chunks in a large bowl; combine all other salad ingredients and toss well, carefully combining all ingredients. Allow salad to rest one hour at room temperature.

2. Season ciabatta bread with extra virgin olive oil and toast until golden brown, cut in thick slices and place on plate.

3. Add 2 cups organic arugula (or as much as desired) to marinating salad and toss well to coat leaves.

4. Spoon salad over the ciabatta bread slices, add a little of the juice on top.

5. Drizzle with aged balsamic vinegar and serve.

** While this may seem like a shameless plug for my client, I really wanted to share this with everyone because it is one of those restaurant recipes that is so easy to make at home. Now, of course, mine didn’t taste exactly like it does at the resturant, but close enough. Enjoy.

While we definitely enjoy hitting up the farmer’s market and making most dinners at home, I’ll always have the urge to check out what’s new with Indy’s dining scene. I’m a huge fan of the local food movement and am always curious to try new places. Before the end of the year, I’d like to make it, at least once, to each of the the restaurants listed below. If you’ve dined at any of these before, please leave a comment with a few recommendations, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Daydreaming of a Bedroom Makeover

If I had the funds to give my bedroom a makeover (which it desperately needs), here are a few items I’m dying to get my hands on. I also love the idea of a circle bed canopy with mix-matched curtains, but I’ve yet to find something I think would go with all this. One day, one day.
